How does a transmission work

Signs of a Low Transmission Fluid

Your car can only really work because of the transmission. Making sure that you have enough transmission fluid in your car for it to operate is a huge part in keeping your car up to date and running well. There are a few tail tell signs that you are running low on transmission fluid—keep these in mind as you drive, and make sure to schedule a six-month check up with us for maintenance and fluid changes.

Trouble Shifting Gears

One of the things that your transmission does, is let your car change gears quickly and smoothly. Trouble shifting gears could be a sign that your transmission fluid is low since gears require that fluid to lubricate their movements. Even automatic cars cannot escape this, because even though the car is doing the work, the fluid is still being used as a fundamental lubricant for the engine. By the same token, if you have a delay or a full non-response when you shift gears, it could not only mean that your transmission fluid is low—it could mean the whole transmission is bad.

Transmission Slips

Transmission slips can be a somewhat jarring experience. This happens when there is a loss of synchronization between the engine and the car itself. What happens, is the transmission speeds up, you can hear and feel it, but the car doesn’t speed up. Transmission slippage is very unsafe, especially at high speeds. If you experience this, take it in to us immediately.

Fluid Leaks

One of the most obvious indicators that the transmission is having an issue is if you find leaks under the car or in the engine compartment. If you think it is a transmission fluid issue, recognizing the fluid is very easy—since it is a bright red color. However, if you have leaking under your car and it is brown or a very dark red, you should consider having the car towed to us instead. At that point the fluid is contaminated and continued use of it, increases the chances that the engine will stop all together.
